In Episode 3 ‘The Scholarly Approach’, KRS One, provides an accurate and correct version of accounts relating to the birth of Hip Hop. Whilst Hip Hop is given to Kool Herc, KRS One, goes on to share the influences and contributing factors, from Afrikaa Bambataa and the Zulu Nation, who wanted to achieve peace love and ‘unity’, with having fun and gaining knowledge and overstanding, as a generation found an identity they truly owned.
Providing listeners with a first hand account of how the tiny subculture grew from a few neighbourhoods, progressed by Grandmaster Flash in 76, with the significance of the mixer, KRS One shares, the struggle of getting Hip Hop played on radio and keenly sharing the importance of taking the correct approach to learning to DJing. He goes on to explain why learning on vinyl is important for young DJ’s who wish to ascend the culture, to be able to build on the history carved, by DJ’s such as Breakout, Dj Jazzy Jeff, DJ Red Alert, and Chuck Chillout, who created wonderful creations without the use of Serato, or consoles, and who mastered cutting, juggling, and flanging, to be passed to Hip Hop’s next generation, to be built upon.
