Manchester Hypes & Matt Fenton on Grime Theatre Show ‘ The Treatment ‘! Interview w/ Kai Jasper
MCR grime pioneer Manchester Hypes and theatre director Matt Fenton joined KJ on Unity Radio to discuss The Treatment, an innovative production blending live grime, theatre, visuals and personal storytelling.
During the interview, Hypes reflected on his journey through Manchester’s grime scene, from rap battles in school playgrounds and youth clubs to helping shape the city’s music culture. He spoke about how grime gave his generation an outlet for their energy, creativity and self expression, while highlighting Manchester’s contribution to a scene often dominated by London artists.
Originally commissioned in 2019, The Treatment faced delays during the COVID-19 pandemic before finally coming to life. The production draws heavily on Hypes’ personal experiences, exploring his upbringing, adult ADHD diagnosis and mental health, alongside the role music has played in helping him navigate life’s challenges.
Hypes also discussed the emotional side of revisiting his past, including memories of his late grandfather, and how stepping outside his comfort zone helped shape the show into a more complete and personal experience.
Director Matt Fenton explained how the production combines the energy of a live grime gig with the storytelling of theatre. Through music, video projections and immersive design, audiences are taken on a journey through Hypes’ life, balancing humour and nostalgia with more vulnerable moments.
The pair also discussed the importance of representation, reflecting on Manchester’s under recognised influence on UK grime and the power of creative expression to help people better understand themselves.
Whether you love grime, Manchester music or theatre, The Treatment offers a fresh experience that brings two creative worlds together.
