Jamal Edwards: A Man Universally Loved in UK Music Culture
On Sunday evening news broke around the tragic passing of UK music mogul, mentor and entrepreneur Jamal Edwards. Jamal was a pioneer, a trailblazer, an icon, a legend, a visionary but most importantly a son and a brother. Everyone at Unity Radio sends their deepest and utmost condolences to the close friends and family of Jamal Edwards, may he rest in peace.
Jamal was the founder of widely successful, underground UK music platform SBTV. A platform that gave the spotlight to so many artists within the UK music scene that have gone on to become household names within the industry; Ed Sheeran, Dave, Skepta and Giggs, just to name a few. The influence Jamal has had on the UK music scene cannot be understated, something blatantly evident with the amount of messages UK artists have left for Jamal since his passing. A man that was universally loved by a scene that can be divisive at times, for the simple and plain fact of that he wanted those he gave a platform to succeed in every way possible.
Jamal has built a nationwide platform that still continues to service its purpose of giving upcoming artists the opportunity to showcase their skills. It’s this type of selfless act that will allow for Jamal and SBTV’s legacy to continue on long in to the future, who knows how many more superstars the platform may produce. To honour and celebrate Jamal’s service to music we will be playing classic SBTV moments on The Breakfast Show for the rest of the week, bringing some F64’s and Warm Up Sessions back from the YouTube archives to remember and appreciate the work Jamal has done for UK culture.
