J. Cole’s The Off-Season album just dropped!
The North Carolina rapper J.Cole released his sixth studio album The Off-Season on Friday after hints of a new one. J. Cole’s The Off-Season follows his single ‘I n t e r l u d e’ which was released a week prior to the album. All five of J. Cole’s studio LPs have been certified platinum Albums by the RIAA. With his previous three famously going “platinum with no features”.
His third song on the album ‘my . life’ provides an insight into what he is wanting to achieve and what he has left, it starts off slow before the tempo builds up. He speculates that song writing is all he has after the people that he grew up with are now laying in a coffin, “my life is all I have, my rhymes, my pen, my pad” which is sung with Morray.
J. Coles’ The Off-Season, sheds a light on his earlier life with ‘pride . is . a . devil’, Cole uses this song to discuss the issues around his own pride and the problems this has caused for his family. This is his seventh song on the album and one that the 36-year-old chooses to announce that he is “thankful ’cause I made it past my thirties, no one murdered me”, before he shares a memory of when a gun was pulled on him.
In 2019, J. Cole and Dreamville released Revenge of the Dreamers III. Last year he released three singles “Lion King on Ice”, “Snow On Tha Bluff” and “The Climb Back”, which is now featured on The Off Season as the tenth song on the album. The . climb . back acts as a journey through J. Cole’s life and how he has become successful in his rap career “Slowly revealin’ myself, buildin’ my wealth”.
Since his release of KOD, J. Cole has delivered some of his own guest versus. His feature in 21 Savage’s “a lot”, earned the rappers the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Rap Song.
As Cole has said, The Off-Season has been years in the making. So, alongside the album he has released a mini-documentary Applying Pressure: The Off-Season. This provides an insight into the inspiration behind the album, the title, and what the 36 year old has been doing prior to the album release.
