You Can Adopt talk New Campaign encouraging more Black Families to consider Adoption! Interview w/ Kai Jasper
Unity Radio’s Kai Jasper sat down with Jennifer from You Can Adopt to discuss their latest campaign aimed at encouraging more black families to explore adoption and to highlight why Black and mixed-heritage children often wait longer to find permanent homes.
Jennifer, who has personally adopted two children, shared her heartfelt journey and the realities of the adoption process. She first adopted her eldest son nine years ago, just before his first birthday, and later welcomed her second son into the family during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking with Kai, Jennifer reflected on the adoption process from the very beginning. She explained that prospective adopters are supported closely by social workers, who ask detailed questions about their background, relationships, and upbringing.
“The social workers aren’t being nosey,” Jennifer explained they ask those questions to truly understand you, so they can match you with a child who will thrive in your care.
Jennifer also stressed that adoption is open to people from all walks of life. It doesn’t matter where you live, whether you rent or own your home, have a house or a flat, or even if you don’t have a garden. What matters is that it’s a safe, loving, and welcoming environment. That’s what makes a family.
Through You Can Adopt’s new campaign, Jennifer hopes to challenge misconceptions about who can adopt and to inspire more Black families to come forward. There are so many children from Black and mixed-heritage backgrounds waiting for a forever home. If you’ve ever thought about adoption, now is the time to find out more.
