Violence Reduction Unit talk understanding youth violence & preventing crime! Interview w/ The NYG Show
Michael Phipps from The Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) joined the NGY show to talk about the VRU’s efforts on
preventing crime for young people by aiding the youth’s communities or their day to day life.
As the Community Lead for the VRU, Michael undertakes the responsibility to understand a communities
weaknesses and strengths, as this knowledge can help aid and prevent knife and youth crime.
The VRU also works closely with young people to provide opportunities including
sports facilities for struggling areas, or providing one-to-one navigators. The navigator programmes
offer a personal youth worker who can individually aid young people.
In his talk with the NGY Show, Michael goes further into recommendations when encountering a violent
scenario and the best tips to seek support and help in situations involving knife crime.

In its community group page, VRU states:
When communities are affected by violence often the key to sustainable solutions can often be found by
speaking to local residents about the underlying causes of crime, working with rather than
deciding for them. Six areas are receiving investment across Greater Manchester and will deliver
community led pilots. Working in a place based way these initiatives are about learning what are the
priorities in each community and co-designing services with local people that will benefit their
community.
