Unity Radio celebrated a major milestone this month, 10 years of the Next Gen Youth Programme, a project that has empowered young people across Greater Manchester through music, media, and meaningful conversation.
Next Gen Youth is a VRU partnered programme that delivers a nine-week radio production course for young people, combining hands on creative learning with real broadcast opportunities. Each cohort works towards producing their own content and presenting a live weekly radio slot, giving them a platform to share their talent, opinions, and lived experiences.
The programme has become a valued pathway for young people who may not otherwise have access to creative industries. It provokes important discussions, builds confidence, and equips participants with practical skills in music production, broadcasting, teamwork, and storytelling, all while introducing them to real industry environments and opportunities.
Over the past decade, NGY has helped shape a generation of young creatives, offering not just a voice, but direction. Many participants have gone on to pursue careers and further training in music, radio, and digital media, using the confidence and experience gained through the programme as a foundation.

The 10 year celebration event brought together young people, partners, educators, and supporters to recognise the impact of the project and the achievements of those involved. Awards were presented by Kate Green, Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, who acknowledged the importance of initiatives like NGY in creating safer, more positive futures for young people.
Unity Radio extended thanks to key partners who have supported the programme’s growth and delivery over the years, including Salford City Council and the teams at HOST, Home of Skills and Technology, whose facilities and collaboration have played an important role in providing young people with access to cutting edge creative environments.
Special appreciation was also given to Matt, Steve, and the wider delivery teams and mentors who continue to champion young voices behind the scenes.
As a station rooted in community and youth culture, Unity Radio remains committed to sharing and protecting the voices of Greater Manchester’s young people.
The Next Gen Youth Show stands as a powerful example of what happens when creativity, opportunity, and support come together, giving young people not only a platform, but a pathway.
