Dr Peggy Mulongo on understanding Honour Based Abuse! Interview w/ Kai Jasper
In this interview, Kai Jaspers speaks with Dr Peggy Mulongo, a senior lecturer and researcher in mental health, diversity, and equality at the University of Lancashire, about the serious issue of honour-based abuse and the importance of understanding honour based abuse.
Dr Peggy explains that honour-based abuse involves harmful behaviours such as violence, threats, intimidation, control, and coercion. She stresses that “there is no honour in honour-based abuse” and reminds people that nobody should have to experience it alone.
Honour based abuse can take many forms, including forced marriage, domestic abuse, physical violence, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, psychological manipulation, and financial control. Some individuals may also be restricted from leaving the home or having personal freedom.
Dr Peggy highlights that many people experiencing honour-based abuse do not realise that what they are facing is abuse. Because of this, many cases go unreported. Fear of consequences such as losing family relationships or being disowned can also stop victims from seeking help.
She explains that honour-based abuse is not limited to one community or culture. Those responsible are often close family members, extended relatives, or even community members. In some cases, people may not fully understand the harm they are causing because of their own upbringing and experiences.
Warning signs can include becoming withdrawn, missing school or work, cutting off contact with friends, or showing signs of fear and anxiety. Dr Peggy encourages people to check in with anyone they may be worried about.
While traditions and values are important, Dr Peggy says behaviours based on fear, pressure, and control can cause serious harm. She believes that recognising and challenging these behaviours is key to protecting future generations.
