Between 9 & 11pm on September 25th 2020, Jonny G, founder and co-owner of Unity Radio 92.8FM, finally takes to the airwaves with the inaugural ‘Greens’ launch show, celebrating and championing HipHop and street culture. ‘I want to bring more conscience HipHop back to UnityRadio.’
No stranger to the music, youth, media or fashion industries, Greens has worked extensively in the shadows providing creative and long term vision for media, youth work, fashion and music initiatives through a boundless drive. This has led to working with regional, national and international organisations around the world from Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Moscow and back to little old Manchester. Brokering deals and providing foundations for talent, Greens creates and develops exciting brand partnerships, business networks and opportunities as a driving force behind innovation.
Greens started his early creative industries career through pirate radio station 106 FM based in a 12th floor council flat in Moss Side’s 7 Sisters. The station was grown and expanded eventually to complete its mission of becoming a legal and sustainable radio station in media’s spiritual home, alongside the giant media corporations such as BBC and ITV at MediaCityUK. With his upcoming show he wants to ‘celebrate the city and inspire creatives in Manchester. There will be vinyl mixes in the show,’, and he will play conscience HipHop and invite guests from the industry he has been working in. He will also talk about ‘what is going on behind the scenes at the radio station and about plans for the future.’
Following the murder of the pirate radio’s Co-Founder, Robert Hargreaves, Greens expanded the stations engagement with the young audiences to include HipHop related workshops such as DJing, MCing, Graffiti and Street Dance, working with schools, agencies and young people who fall outside mainstream education to share a love of HipHops four elements and providing positive pathways to opportunities and employment for youth trapped in the system. The conscience HipHop Jon will be playing will also give ‘an inspirational and beneficial messaged to the audience.’
With a global creative industries network at his fingertips including artists, broadcasters, manufacturers, youth education programmes and entrepreneurs, Greens is extremely excited to be out from behind his desk after years of business development taking to the airwaves as he gets set for the biggest and most significant project of his career. He is also most proud and humbled to be involved in launching The Manchester Hip Hop Archive.
