B.L.O.O.M. is a women’s DJ collective based in Manchester which aims to promote gender equality in electronic music through increasing visibility of women and gender non-binary artists. We subscribe to the term “woman” in the most inclusive sense, referring to all manifestations of woman; from transgender to cisgender, black to white, heterosexual to homosexual, and so on. B.L.O.O.M. was born out of a shared feeling of frustration of lack of visibility and representation within the student DJ scene.
B.L.O.O.M launched a night series back in September to showcase artists we love and want to share with the people around us. We are as inclusive in genre as we are in gender, so each night feels and sounds unique. You can expect anything from the more obscure corners of house & techno to world music or relentless acid to unabashed disco. B.L.O.O.M wants to support people in every possible way so all the artwork for our nights is created by women and other underrepresented genders. B.L.O.O.M will be playing Soundwave Festival in Croatia in July 2018, this is a massive opportunity for the all female Dj collective and Unity radio wishes them all the best.
The aim is to create a more diverse scene and in order to achieve this, DJing needs to be made more accessible. B.L.O.O.M have recently launched Spin Class; a series of women-led DJ workshops in collaboration with fellow all-female DJ collective Meat Free, and local DIY community arts space Partisan Collective.
Phoebe from B.L.O.O.M has taken some out to do a personal guest-mix live in the studio for daytime presenter, Tarzsa. Catch the mimimix season continue over the next 8 weeks from 10am-1pm!
