‘Sam Davies’ speaks to Unity Radio’s ‘DJ Basha’ & ‘Eldris Tiller’ about being apart of the CuteMobb, plus what it’s like working with the Spanish Music Industry after moving to Barcelona from Manchester.
Sam is a rapper with roots in Manchester living in Barcelona. This duality of cultures is part of his musical identity.
Sam Davies talks about CuteMobb, lockdown and his new video in Gallery Sessions. In 2020 Sam Davies released his first solo album, entitled ‘Funprint’ and features hit songs such as Butterflies and Oumuamua. In the same year, he worked on another album ‘Cute Tapes’ as part of the CuteMobb collective. His most popular track in this project is Feelings reaching 500 000 views on Youtube.
Sam Davies says: [CuteMobb] “ It’s basically a collective of different artists”.
He explains its purpose is to unite artists of all fields of the music industry from designers to singers, so they can support each other and grow their craft. This is necessary because the music industry in Spain doesn’t offer enough opportunities.
DJ Basha asked Sam Davies why he thinks the Spanish Industry isn’t diverse enough.
Sam Davies says: “ The problem is everyone wants to be the rapper, and not everyone can be the guy spitting on the mic”.
“Apart from that politicians and old head’s like that, they don’t let us artist’s eat out here, probably some of the most famous artists need to be working 9 to 5.”
Sam Davies is known for performing songs both in English and Spanish. He talked about how he uses the languages he knows to make his music better and express himself with more honesty.
He said: “It’s been like that my whole life.”
“I don’t think about it. If it doesn’t rhyme in English I switch it up to Spanish. It’s like a cheat code for writing.”
Sam also shared about the reality of lockdown in Spain that is quite different from the UK. He is spending most days creating music at home.
Still, the artist plans that he will have his next gig with CuteMobb in May.
Eldris asked Sam Davies what goals he has for 2021. Sam said:
“ I can’t even say it’s going to be a good year. Not everything is in our hands”
“ I don’t have big expectations but I am sure I will be doing a whole lot of music and grow. It’s time to shine.”
