Sam Byron Reflects on Music, Mentorship, and Nostalgia! Interview w/ Jay Kurdy
Manchester Rising artist Sam Byron sat down with mentor and Unity Radio presenter Jay Kurdy to discuss his journey through the Unity Radio Academy, the inspiration behind his latest music, and what lies ahead in his career.
Sam Byron first emerged through the Unity Radio Academy, where he mastered his craft alongside peers under the guidance of Jay Kurdy. The academy played a vital role in developing Sam foundational skills, setting the stage for his entry into the UK music scene.
Speaking on his latest single Devotion, Byron shared the personal story behind the track. The song revisits a joyful childhood memory spent with a close friend and explores themes of nostalgia and emotional connection. Sam said “Devotion is about reminiscing on that time and wondering if the other person remembers it the same way I do.” While rooted in a single day, the track represents a broader reflection on his youth.
Looking ahead, Byron’s upcoming release takes on a more introspective tone. The track focuses on the desire for deeper family connections, asking the question: If the world was falling apart, would you be there for me? It’s a theme that echoes universal sentiments of vulnerability and the longing for closeness.
During their conversation, Kurdy and Byron also discussed the importance of authenticity in music, particularly within the hip-hop community. Jay noted a growing disconnect in the genre, commenting that many artists seem disconnected from the emotional weight that music can carry. Byron echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that genuine feeling remains at the core of his songwriting.
As the interview drew to a close, Byron opened up about where he sees his career heading. Reflecting on his early successes, he expressed excitement about future projects and a deep appreciation for the journey so far. “I’m just enjoying the process,” he said. “This is only the beginning.”
With heartfelt lyrics and a grounded approach to his craft, Sam Byron is quickly becoming a voice to watch in the UK music landscape.
