PrinceTheKid talks Identity, Consistency and the Rise of Afro Bop! Interview w/ Kai Jasper
Manchester-based artist Princethekid joined Kai Jasper on Unity Radio Primetime for a wide-ranging conversation that explored identity, growth, and the journey behind his emerging sound. The interview captured an artist at a pivotal moment, balancing self-belief with reflection as he prepares to release his debut EP Gully Man this May.
Born and raised in Rome, Italy, with Nigerian heritage and now rooted in Manchester, Princethekid spoke candidly about growing up between cultures. While he praised Italian culture and upbringing, he also reflected on the challenges of not fully feeling like he belonged, experiences that have shaped both his world-view and music. Rather than regret, he framed these moments as formative, helping define his resilience and artistic voice.
Musically, Prince describes his sound as Afro Bop, a blend of Afrobeats, Jamaican influence, European rhythm and UK swing. Inspired by artists such as 2Face Idibia, Burna Boy, Bob Marley, and even early dance trends, his music is designed to move people physically and emotionally. “It makes your head bop,” he explained, emphasising energy, rhythm, and live performance.
A recurring theme throughout the interview was consistency. Prince highlighted the importance of showing up, comparing music to a library that must constantly be updated to keep people engaged. That mindset has helped him build momentum, from viral content moments to sold-out shows and support slots, including a performance at Wembley Arena.
The name Gully Man, he explained, represents his stage persona, an alter ego that takes over during performances, transforming his normally laid-back personality into something explosive and commanding. This duality is central to his upcoming EP, which promises vulnerability, motivation, party-ready tracks, and storytelling across English and Italian lyrics.
Looking ahead, Princethekid plans to connect further with audiences in Manchester, London, Italy, Germany, and Nigeria, aiming to bridge cultures and scenes. His message is clear: keep moving, know your worth, and turn adversity into fuel. As he told listeners, “Gully Man isn’t just a project, it’s a journey”.
