Matthew Norford of 1Message talks on Gang and Youth crime prevention! Interview w/ The NYG Show
Ex Gang Member and founder of 1Message , Matthew Norford, joined The NYG Show
on Unity Radio to talk on prevention of gang and young crime in Greater Manchester.
Matthew tells of his own personal story with crime, drugs, and violence.
As well as the reason behind his beginnings as a gang member, his experience in and out of prison,
and the lasting consequences of his rough past.
After seeing his brother on his deathbed due to knife crime, Matthew changed
his ways and began a life long mission to prevent other young people going on the same path he did.
For this, he now runs his mentoring service, 1Message, a way for young people
to see professional and appropriate role models who can push for a better life and influence
by constantly being present and providing helpful advice. The service describes its purpose
as: “to encourage, engage and empower young people to take responsibility for their lives in
a productive way. We offer alternative education of the consequences of criminal engagement
and encourage different pathways through providing them with informed choices.”
Matthew is now collaborating with the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) in a
community led project to understand the best ways to lead young people away from gang crime.
He talks on the collaboration and on further advice for a positive and better change for young people.
