This week, as Unity Radio celebrates ten years of its Next Gen Youth (NGY) platform- a programme dedicated to helping young people recognise the signs of exploitation and lead safer lives – the station is turning its focus to a stark example of why that mission matters. As part of the NGY milestone, CEO Greens will sit down with former Bad Boy Records artist Mark Curry for a candid conversation about power, manipulation, and survival in the music industry to help younger people gain knowledge from those with experience, to lead safer, happier lives. The interview comes at a pivotal moment, as the world grapples with the dark legacy of Sean “Diddy” Combs, a story thrust into the global spotlight by the Netflix docuseries, The Reckoning.
Who is Mark Curry? From “Bad Boy for Life” to Dancing with the Devil.
Mark Curry’s name is synonymous with the Bad Boy era. The American rapper, who signed with the label in 1997, is perhaps best known for his feature on the 2001 anthem “Bad Boy for Life” alongside Puff Daddy and Black Rob, a track that became a global hit. But behind the glossy music videos, Curry was living a very different reality. For years, he toured and wrote hits, all while the promise of his own debut album never materialised. He watched as the publishing rights to the songs he helped create brought zero financial return, locked away by a system where the label and its founder owned the lion’s share. Disillusioned and financially broken, Curry made the difficult decision to step away from his rap career entirely, returning to Georgia and becoming a carpenter to make ends meet. In 2009, he channelled his experiences into a searingly honest book, Dancing with the Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of Hip Hop. The memoir detailed his tumultuous years under Combs’s leadership, painting a picture of manipulation, broken promises, and a culture of fear. He has often referred to Combs as “the devil,” a figure of immense power who controlled everyone in his orbit. Even years after leaving Bad Boy, Curry has stated he has not fully recovered, financially or emotionally.
The Reckoning: A Story of Predatory Power
Curry’s story is a vital thread in the larger tapestry now being examined in the Netflix series The Reckoning. The docuseries lays out a relentless portrait of a man described as “the 1 per cent of the 1 per cent of the 1 per cent” – so powerful that his ultimate aim became total control over those around him. The series features former associates who admit to dismissing red flags for years, seduced by the promise of success until they felt trapped with no way out. It’s a harrowing look at how predatory behaviours can fester in environments of extreme power imbalance.
Tomorrow’s conversation between Greens and Mark Curry brings a human perspective to those headlines. He will discuss his book, the Netflix documentary, and what it was like to finally, in September 2023, receive the publishing rights to his work from Bad Boy—a move by Combs that surprised the industry, returning rights to artists like Curry, Ma$e, and The Lox, just a month before Cassie Ventura filed her bombshell lawsuit. As NGY celebrates ten years of helping young people navigate the creative industries safely, Mark Curry’s story is a powerful reminder that knowing the signs of toxic abuse and manipulation is the first step in ensuring young people not only find their voice, but stay safe while using it.
Tune in to Unity Radio on Saturday March 7th between 2 and 4pm, and hear Greens in conversation with Mark Curry from 3pm, – now looking to the future, and back working on projects with artists like DeCosta, who will be joining in the studio to share more on their latest works.
