Manchester Hypes Reflects on Full-Circle Journey from Grime Roots to Youth Mentor! Interview w/ KJ & Mica Lucy
Manchester artist Manchester Hypes sat down with KJ and Mica Lucy on Prime Time to reflect on his journey from the early grime scene to becoming a mentor for young people in his city.
Coming up in Manchester before social media took off, Hypes described a time when music was all about raw energy and community. As a kid Hypes would be in parks and schools, clashing and collaborating and didn’t realise that at the time he was building something bigger.
Platforms like Unity Radio played a key role in that journey, giving young artists a space to perform and grow. Since then, the music industry has changed, with tools like TikTok making it easier for artists to build an audience but for Hypes, the foundation remains the same.
His path has since taken an unexpected turn into education. After being introduced to university through a workshop, he eventually returned as a teacher something he describes as a “full-circle moment.”
Now, he runs Creative Club, a music-focused initiative aimed at helping young people express themselves through lyric writing, production, and performance. The sessions, which are free to attend, are designed especially for those who may be struggling with things like behaviour or mental health.
“I built something I wish I had when I was younger,” he explained.
Alongside mentoring, Hypes is still actively making music, including branching out into house production, with his tracks gaining traction in clubs and DJ sets.
Looking back, he says the key is simple: stay consistent and don’t overthink it.
“It might be the track you least expect that blows,” he said.
