This year, the Manchester Hip Hop Academy, launched at Central Library.
Bringing together young people from across Greater Manchester interested in Hip Hop music, fashion, and entertainment, using the Manchester Hip Hip Archive collection, for learning and inspiration.
The project started by looking at the old school Manchester Rap scene, and researching Rapper’s that shot CD’s on market street.
The group then decided to work on two projects. Alfie Hart’s ‘Back Yard Productions’ ( a young person led music production business initiative) and DJ J33P’s mixtape, taking the best tracks from the archive CD collection, to create a fresh mixtape to be burnt onto CD’s which created music products that can be given out as promo or sold, to music listeners.
During the project, the group have researched music, created a timeline with roles and responsibilities for the team to write and record lyrics, produce tracks, create biogs and a press kit, design artwork for CD and marketing assets, DIY burn audio CD’s, planned photoshoot with sourced outfits and locations for shoots, created the work and showcased it on the Next Gen Youth’s on Unity Radio 92.8FM working with DJ Basha & Greens. Delivering a fully youth led produced programme and content.
The two music projects will now be professionally produced on CD and a limited number will be sold in Manchester during the Easter school holidays with a limited number available online.
