Essii talks to Unity Radio’s Poppy Smith about her new track, ‘Brown Eyes’ which features Los Angeles rapper Coi Leray. She and Poppy cover several subjects from her early musical inspirations including Michael Jackson and Tyler The Creator, to her start in the industry in 2020 – her rise has been meteoric. Essii tells Poppy about the challenges of being a woman in the R&B scene and the difficulties of balancing the need to speak her mind with how she is being perceived. She also discussed how the merging of global artists is creating new and exciting music.

The 19-year-old Suffolk singer burst onto the scene in December 2020 with her single ‘Pourin’. Her music interlaces modern R&B vocal melodies with a stylised afrobeat. Even in her short time on the scene the British-Zambian artist has already garnered mainstream attention.
