Dr Denise Miller talks new NHS campaign ‘ Best Start for Life ‘ in interview with Unity Radio’s Kai Jasper on Primetime, recently the pair spoke about the government’s new campaign, designed to support parents and carers from pregnancy through to starting school and beyond.
Dr Miller, who received a National Teaching Fellowship and Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2024, explained that the campaign brings together trusted NHS and government advice in one easy-to-access place through the Best Start for Life website and a growing network of Family Hubs across England.
The campaign covers a range of topics including pregnancy, infant feeding, childcare, parent-infant relationships, early education and preparing children for school. Its aim is to help families feel more confident, informed and supported during the early years of a child’s development.
Dr Miller highlighted concerns that nearly one in three children in England start school without the skills they need to thrive by age five, particularly children from disadvantaged and minority ethnic backgrounds. Research has shown many parents feel overwhelmed by the amount of parenting advice online and often struggle to know what information they can trust.
“Every child, regardless of their background or ethnicity, deserves the best possible start in life,” Dr Miller said.
She also explained that some families face barriers including language difficulties, limited access to culturally appropriate support and lower health literacy, which can make services harder to access.
The interview also discussed childcare support available to families. Eligible parents may receive up to 30 hours of government-funded childcare during term time, while lower-income families may be able to claim up to 85% of childcare costs through Universal Credit.
Parents and carers are encouraged to use the Best Start for Life website for trusted advice, guidance and local support.
