On Friday evening, Madface interviewed DJ Moeskieno as part of the OSJ Takeover at Unity Radio. They talked about making music; from finding inspiration, to performing tracks live.
DJ Moeskieno told us his passion for music was imparted to him from his grandmother, who used to play old soul records around the house. The records she listened to often carried stories, which inspired more of an emotional connection to the music.
Moeskieno’s favourite era of music is the 90s, where authentic, meaningful tracks helped identify the period as the ‘Golden Era’ of music. Part of his motivation to create music comes from making his audience feel good, and helping them to “step out of that realm of negativity.” Some of the artists that Moeskieno has collaborated with include Fred the Godson, Uncle Murda and DJ Whoo Kid.
DJ Moeskieno loves what’s happening with UK sound at the moment, with a lot of UK Hip Hop and R&B rapidly gaining popularity over in America. He wants to take in more of the music and learn more about the artists behind the sound before jumping into the scene.
Moeskieno came into the industry using old-school turntables but has embraced the arrival of newer technology, such as the Rane Twelve, which has enabled DJs to create beats live, as well as perform smoother transitions. He believes that “we have to elevate, learn and teach each other more things” with the new technology available today.
Going forward, Moeskieno aims to be on tour with his music, working on new projects and hopefully collaborating with artists from the UK.
