Course Overview

The NGY ( Next Gen Youths) are a group of young people aged 13-17 who attend radio-training workshops twice a week and deliver a live radio show on the North’s leading youth music radio station, Unity Radio.

The radio show includes music, features and information on local issues that affect young people, such as mental health and wellbeing, education, training and employment and awareness of risks to young people . By creating peer-to-peer education and social scaffolding, they are helping to increase resilience among young people while safeguarding the vulnerable and at risk.

The Programme

The programme will provide you with an introduction to all the key skills required to be a great radio presenter – from interviewing and planning show features to DJing and reviewing music. Alongside this, you’ll present four live radio shows and work towards an Arts Award! Scroll down to see the weekly schedule.

Weekly Schedule

  • Week 1 – A tour of our state-of-the-art studio, what makes a good radio show and creating your own ‘drop’ – a 10 second clip introducing your show alongside music.
  • Week 2 – How to conduct a good interview and the first live NGY show of the programme!
  • Week 3 – What makes a good review, and an introduction to DJing!
  • Week 4 – The second live NGY show – make sure to tell your friends and family to tune in!
  • Week 5 – Planning show features alongside researching an artist of your choice for the Arts Award.
  • Week 6 – The third NGY live show!
  • Week 7 – You’ll pick a skill which you’ve learnt over the past 6 weeks, and teach it to another member of the group.
  • Week 8 – The final NGY show of the programme.
  • Week 9 – Reflections, feedback and a fun celebration of your achievements with games, food and the presentation of your Arts Award certificate!

How to apply as a young person

Referring a Young Person

  • Many of our NGY participants are referred to us by education institutions and social services. The NGY has had a hugely beneficial impact on many of our previous participants, and we have seen improvements in attitudes to learning as a result of the programmme. It’s a safe space where a young person can meet and collaborate with other young people that may have similar issues, and be taught skills that could lead them to a media career in a fun and informal setting.
  • To refer a young person, please fill in this form. Alternatively, head to courses@unityradio.co.uk or call 0161 686 5745.
