Blaze FM on Pirate Radio, Grime & Freedom Of Speech! Interview w/ Kai Jasper
Blaze FM is coming to Unity Radio as the team behind the powerful new theatre production join Kai Jasper on Primetime tomorrow to discuss pirate radio, Grime culture, community and freedom of speech.
Written by playwright James Meteyard and Grime MC Jammz, and directed by Maggie Norris, Blaze FM tells the story of a pirate radio station operating from a rundown Hackney council flat, where new music and uncensored political perspectives are broadcast across the airwaves.
At the heart of the production is the Blaze crew, led by father-figure Hughbert, as they fight to keep their station alive while facing increasing social and economic pressures. Blending Grime, Garage and Drill with theatre, the show explores how music can unite communities, provide a voice and create spaces for free expression.
The production also tackles difficult questions around who is allowed to speak, who gets heard and who decides what can be said, exploring themes including censorship, state overreach and the policing of Black culture. The story draws on real-world events and issues including the Windrush scandal and the censorship of Drill music.
Jammz, founder of the record label I Am Grime, describes the production as being about a community that builds its own platform and the pressures that can ultimately pull it apart.
After premiering at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2025, Blaze FM is now heading out on its first regional tour, with its opening dates taking place at The Lowry in Salford from 17–19 September.
